My First Night in My New Home

Real Advice from real puppy owners

Martha writes: The first night with our Shiba Inu, Nala, went very well considering she had just Martha's Puppy Nala Kohana been taken away from the only place she had known. Leaving behind her family and friends was hard for her. We as a family showed her attention the from the time we got in the car to come home until she went to bed in her crate. We made sure we took her outside to potty at least every 2 to 3 hours, especially after a nap. When it was time to go night-night we put her in her crate with a pillow, a rawhide chew stick and a shirt that had been worn by my daughter. This seemed to help with Nala's separation anxiety. The first night my daughter got up around 2 to let her go outside to potty, then I got up around 4:30 and 8:00 to let her out again. She did really good waiting until we got outside. Her crate was purchased for her to use for future use. It came with an extra panel to size it according to your puppy. Nala has adapted well. She knows when she is put in the crate it is time to go to bed. Since the third night she has been going out to potty around 9:00 or 10:00 and sleeping until 5:30 or 6:00 when she is taking out to potty again. We also purchased a doggie play pen for use inside, which can be used outside. This gives her a little more space to play while we are not home. Easy to take down and put up. Definitely put a piece of clothing with a family members scent on it for comfort where ever your new puppy sleeps!

Alan and Patti write: Alan and Patti's puppy pearl The first night was a bit tough because "Pearl" was in her crate for the first time in a new house. She slept, but was awaking every hour or so and crying. The second night was much improved. We placed her crate in our bedroom and she knew we were there. She slept until early morning. She has made great progress toward training. She let's us know when she needs to go outside. The crate training works great. She is such a lovable and intelligent puppy. We are very happy with our new family member!
Thanks for your help and continued support!

Amanda writes: When we left your house, all Simba did was sleep the whole way home. Amanda's Puppy Simba When we got home I made him the mush mixture, then took him outside to potty, than I introduced him to Layla (our other dog). Simba took to Layla real quick. He followed her around for a few minuets then plopped down and went to sleep. He only cried a few times, when he did I just held him and talked to him. For the first 2 ½ - 3 weeks I would have to get up with him to take him out to potty every three hours. But now he sleeps through the night. We have only had four accidents since we have had him. I am not sure if we are lucky or you just have great puppies, but this has been great! Thanks again for such a great puppy.

Emmanuel writes: The puppy is doing great! The first night of course I did not sleep much as he was getting use to the crate and his new home and I basically woke up every two hours to take him out. He has a great personality and he is a healthy little sucker. The second night (last night) I played with him till he was tired and put him in the crate around 10pm and was expecting for him to cry every two or three hours but to my surprise I looked at the clock and it was 5:15am which is the normal time I regularly wake up for work and I suddenly got worried because I did not hear from him all night!? Well he did great, not an accident, as I went to his crate he was sure to let me know and I took him out. Just want to thank you because he is a very healthy boy we named him Niko. I wanted to ask you how soon you think I should wait to get some flea and tick medication on Niko?

Regards, E-

Trent writes: Kevin, Just wanted to touch base with you and let you know how Fenway is doing. His first night he was a little nervous and wouldn't really sleep too much. He woke me up a few times during the night and I took him outside and he'd have to go to the bathroom then would go back to bed. The second night however was much better. I took him out around 10 and he slept from then on til 6:45 the next morning!! He's sleeping through the nights now and has only had 1 accident in the house!! Here is a pic of Fenway in his new home!! Thank you guys SO much!!
